FREEZE WARNING:
Prevent Frozen/Burst Pipes During Cold Snaps
———————————————————————-
Oct. 30, 2023–Temperatures are now dipping below freezing, which can be a recipe for frozen and burst pipes. In view of the ongoing drought, residents are urged to take the following steps to prevent water loss (and property damage) related to frozen pipes:
- Don’t turn the heat all the way down when leaving home for extended periods. Experts recommend maintaining a minimum indoor temperature of 55°
- Insulate exposed outdoor pipes and hose bibs/faucets, and remove hoses from faucets.
- Shut down and drain any sprinkler systems that haven’t yet been winterized.
- Know the location of the emergency shut-off valve. If available, this can be used to turn off water to your house if a pipe should burst.
REMEMBER: If residents require an emergency turn-off they can reach the Water Authority by calling 505-842-WATR (9287). During severe cold snaps, high call volumes and long waits are anticipated. Residents are therefore urged to prevent frozen pipes before they happen!
