Water Usage Down -Metro Area on Track to Meet Conservation Goal
ALBUQUERQUE, October 13, 2009 – Water Authority customers cut way back on their water usage in September, using just 2.969 billion gallons (compared to a conservation target of 3.82 billion gallons). This year’s water usage so far is 25.131 billion gallons – 1.769 billion gallons less than the year-to-date conservation goal.
“We asked our customers to cut back in September, because landscapes need much less water than they did in the summer,” said Water Authority Conservation Officer Katherine Yuhas. “The response has been terrific, and we’ve used nearly two billion gallons less than the amount we had targeted for this point in the year. If this trend continues, with people following the Water by the Numbers program, we can avoid mandatory day-of-the-week watering restrictions and still achieve our per capita usage goal of 150 gallons per day by 2014.”
"The Water Authority’s Water by the Numbers program calls for residents to pick just two days a week to water in the months of September and October," Yuhas said.
Yuhas also encourages Water Authority customers to report water waste by calling 842-WATR.
