ALBUQUERQUE, APRIL 16

  • How to determine the amount of water needed for their particular landscape
  • How to set an appropriate irrigation schedule
  • How to increase sprinkler system efficiency
  • How to enhance their landscapes with low-water-use plants

The average class participant notices outdoor water savings of 18 percent – and all first-time participants earn a $20 credit on their water bill.

The one-hour classes are scheduled at various times and locations throughout the spring and summer. Click here for a class schedule and to register online, or call SmartUse at 888-1722.

Classes on drip irrigation – including how to convert an old sprinkler system to a modern drip system –also are available, but please note that these do not qualify for the $20 credit.

Dry Weather Reminder: Save Water This Spring with 1-2-3-2-1 PDF Print

 Water by the Numbers

ALBUQUERQUE, MARCH 4 – Facing  the region's driest-ever start to a new year, the Water Authority reminds its customers to exercise restraint in watering outdoor landscapes this spring.

“Even when the weather is dry, we can make our landscapes stronger and healthier by only watering one day a week in March,” said Katherine Yuhas, the Water Authority’s conservation officer. “This will encourage root systems to grow deeper and help prepare plants for the hot summer months.”

Yuhas reminded Water Authority customers that in Albuquerque, we still use 40 percent of our drinking water on our yards every year.

“That’s got to change if we’re going to meet state-mandated conservation goals and preserve our aquifer for future generations,” she said. “One of the best ways to save water outdoors is by following our 1-2-3-2-1, Water-by-the-Numbers formula.”

Under the Water by the Numbers program, the Water Authority asks customers to pick their own days to water while limiting landscape irrigation to once a week in March, twice a week in April and May, three times a week in June, July and August, twice a week in September and October, and once a week in November.

“Last year we met our conservation goal using the 1-2-3-2-1 formula, and we can do it again this year,” Yuhas said. “ It’s good for our landscapes, and good for our future!”
