ALBUQUERQUE, MARCH 4 – Facing the region's driest-ever start to a new year, the Water Authority reminds its customers to exercise restraint in watering outdoor landscapes this spring.
“Even when the weather is dry, we can make our landscapes stronger and healthier by only watering one day a week in March,” said Katherine Yuhas, the Water Authority’s conservation officer. “This will encourage root systems to grow deeper and help prepare plants for the hot summer months.”
Yuhas reminded Water Authority customers that in Albuquerque, we still use 40 percent of our drinking water on our yards every year.
“That’s got to change if we’re going to meet state-mandated conservation goals and preserve our aquifer for future generations,” she said. “One of the best ways to save water outdoors is by following our 1-2-3-2-1, Water-by-the-Numbers formula.”
Under the Water by the Numbers program, the Water Authority asks customers to pick their own days to water while limiting landscape irrigation to once a week in March, twice a week in April and May, three times a week in June, July and August, twice a week in September and October, and once a week in November.
“Last year we met our conservation goal using the 1-2-3-2-1 formula, and we can do it again this year,” Yuhas said. “ It’s good for our landscapes, and good for our future!”
