STEP 4 - Grit Chamber

Taking Out the Dirt

We have dirt in our wastewater. It’s not because you were really dirty and you took a shower. Some of our sewer pipes are old and they have cracks. Dirt can trickle into the water through the cracks. We have to get the dirt out or it will break the machines at our wastewater plant. We slow the water down just enough so that heavy dirt will settle and fall. The poop is less dense or lighter, so it doesn’t settle. Gravity does all the hard work for us at the grit (dirt) chamber.

We have to sort the wastewater so we can treat the parts!
