In Honor of Earth Day18 free thermostats will be given away at the Albuquerque BioPark and at Lowe’s Home Improvement Store on Juan Tabo on Saturday, April 23 ALBUQUERQUE, NM, April 21—Evaporative cooler users can save up to 5,000 gallons of water per year by using a swamp cooler thermostat, and the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority is now offering a $25 rebate to Water Authority customers who install one on a new or existing evaporative cooler. “This is a very easy way to save as much as 5,000 gallons of water a year, and customers also benefit from lower utility bills, more comfortable homes and businesses, and less hassle,” said Katherine Yuhas, Water Conservation Officer. Yuhas said the Water Authority will officially launch the program on Saturday, April 23 with a thermostat giveaway at Earth Day information booths at the Albuquerque BioPark and at the Lowe’s Home Improvement Store, 3010 Juan Tabo NE, in Albuquerque. Booths will be open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and nine thermostats will be given away at each location. Yuhas said the $25 rebate offered by the Water Authority as a credit on water bills will “either practically or entirely pay for the thermostats, and customers will also realize savings on both water bills and energy bills for years to come.” The Water Authority has recruited seven partners to promote the thermostat cooler rebate program, which it calls “Don’t Sweat It. Set It.” Thermostats and information are available through:

Once the rebate claim is approved, a $25 credit will be applied to their water bills. “This is something we can all do to help save water during this very dry year, in which we’ve received less than one-quarter of an inch of rainfall so far,” Yuhas said. “We are all going to have to work together to achieve our goal of 155 gallons per person per day.” For more information, visit www.abcwua.org or call 505-768-3655. |
