Water is crucial to our quality of life. Living in the desert, we understand that we must conserve water in order to protect our environment, our economy, and our society.

In 1994, we realized our aquifer was smaller than we thought. We asked residents to conserve water, and they did! From an average of 262 gallons of water per person per day in 1994, we reduced our use to 161 gallons of water per person per day in 2008. That’s over 100 gallons per person per day - in just fourteen years!  gallonsperday.jpg

Now we need to conserve water even more. The Water Authority, which must reduce per-capita water consumption under state requirements for the San Juan-Chama Drinking Water Project, has set a usage goal of 150 gallons per person per day by 2014. The goal for 2009 is 159 gallons per person. To help people learn how to reduce their water use, we have educational programs for just about everyone!
